Children’s Speech & Language Therapy - Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale (HMR) Community

The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy team sits within the wider Children’s Integrated Community Health Services and is and is based at Callaghan House in Heywood, and also located at other community settings such as schools and clinics.

We provide:  

  • Triage of new requests for the service  

  • Advice on speech, language and communication in children and young people  

  • Sign posting and referral to other services such as audiology, Child Development Team and Charitable organisations such as Barnardo's  

  • Assessment of a child or young person's speech, language and communication skills  

  • Evidence-based group and individual therapy for speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)  

  • Advice and therapy programmes that are carried out with the child or young person by parent(s)/carers and teaching staff  

  • Formal reports on children's and young people's Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), as required     

Advice and support is available in the family's home language including:  

  • English  

  • Pakistani heritage language (Mirpuri, Punjabi or Urdu)  

  • Bangladeshi heritage languages (Sylheti or Standard Bangla)  

  • Other languages (via interpreters)     

The service is delivered in a variety of community locations including:  

Rochdale  

  • Croft Shifa Health Centre  

  • Nye Bevan House  

  • Ings Lane Clinic  

Heywood and Middleton  

  • Langley Health Centre  

  • Callaghan House (Departmental Base)  

  • Phoenix Centre  

Littleborough  

  • Littleborough Health Centre  

For children with long-term SLCN a service is delivered in schools in cooperation with school staff.  

We comprise the following:  

  • Short-term speech, language and communication needs (community clinics), including specialist bilingual staff  

  • Long-term speech, language and communication needs (schools and special schools)  

Specialist staff:  

  • Speech and Language Disorders  

  • Autistic Spectrum Conditions and Social Communication Difficulties  

  • Dysfluency (stammering)  

  • Hearing impairment  

  • Alternative and augmentative communication  

  • Dysphagia (feeding and swallowing)
